Arlo Mountford, Incongruence Prelude and 1945-1965, 2018
Exhibited at Sutton Gallery as a part of the exhibition Out of Time, Incongruence, Prelude and 1945-1960 takes the passerby from Andy Warhol’s work, White Burning Car III 1965 as a starting point. Hal Foster famously referred to this figure in his essay ‘Return of the Real’ from 1996, suggesting that for him, the turning away of this figure is the works “punctum” its jolting detail. The passers-by in Incongruence move through multiple art historical canons somewhere in space, naively witnessing works in-congruently mixed and matched, unaware of the offence they may cause.
