Arlo Mountford, The Shift - Mont St Quentin, 2013-15
In 2013 I was commissioned by the Australian War Memorial in Canberra to make moving image background to two WW1 diorama’s, Mont St Quentin and Desert Patrol. Mont St Quentin’s diorama was made by Charles Web Gilbert. The original background was painted by Louis McCubbin and then repainted by George Browning in 1947 and again in 1987. For this 8 hour animation I used images from these original backgrounds and other depictions of Mont St Quentin by commissioned war artists, to create a background which moved in real-time. The time of day depicted corresponding to the time an audience member was viewing the work.
Digital animation, stereo sound. Duration 8 hours.
